Greetings from the
Churchwardens
With many people being away on holiday
in recent weeks some of you may not have caught up with
recent developments and announcements about staffing in
the parish.
Here is an update of what has been happening.
With Paul Heard being appointed as
Vicar last year, his previous role of Associate Vicar
was vacated.
Vestry found it difficult to justify the cost of
supporting two ordained clergy in the current financial
climate, so has been looking at alternative ways to
support ministry in the parish.
The position of Children’s Ministry Coordinator
also became vacant last year.
Bev Mills filled the gap temporarily, but there
was a need to make a permanent appointment to this role.
Then in mid-December Mary Christian advised her
resignation as Parish Secretary, leaving a third
vacancy.
Right at the end of the year, with
three important positions needing to be filled, the
outlook wasn’t the best.
But God sometimes reveals His plans a little at a
time. Many
of you will know Alan and Liz Wallace from the UK, who
spent some time with us last summer.
They felt a calling to come back to New Zealand
and in particular to Sumner where they wanted to be
involved in our Parish again.
There were some early discussions about engaging
Alan to assist Paul with some preaching and to help with
some administrative/management tasks.
Vestry was keen for this to happen.
In the course of the negotiations it was
mentioned that we were looking for someone for the
Children’s Ministry Coordinator position, and so Liz
sent over her CV.
It was decided to talk to her about the role when
they arrived in New Zealand shortly after Christmas.
In the meantime we found ourselves also looking
for a new Parish Secretary.
Once Alan and Liz arrived, and even
before they had a chance to settle in, we began talking
about how we might be able to use their skills.
It quickly became apparent that not
only could Alan fill an ‘Associate Pastor’ role, and Liz
was well experienced to take on the Children’s Ministry
Coordinator role, but also, between the two of them they
could cover the secretarial and administrative tasks.
Alan and Liz have previously worked (together) in
their own event management company, so they bring a
wealth of experience in management and organisation.
Needless to say, these two are literally a
Godsend, an answer to our prayers, and it was with great
pleasure and anticipation that they were offered
positions on the parish staff.
Together they will be employed for 58 hours per
week.
In addition to helping with services
Alan will have responsibility for small groups, ministry
to newcomers and various administrative/ management
tasks. Liz
will coordinate the children’s ministry and will also
fill the secretarial and administrative role.
We expect there will be some crossover between
Aland and Liz and that they will work together in many
areas. This
will be a new way of doing things and we anticipate it
will take a month or three to discover exactly how it
will work.
What’s really exciting will be seeing God’s plans rolled
out in Sumner-Redcliffs.

New Anglican Life
Website Launched
As part of the
rebranding of our diocese a new website
Anglican Life has been launched recently. This
site will feature news and articles about happenings in
the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch. Our radio
station
The Wave is currently featured, as are some of our
young people who attended the Diocesan Youth Forum.
Greening Behind the Green
The
church property at Sumner extends along the foot of the
cliffs behind the Croquet Green. Due to risk of rock
fall, the land is unsuitable for building and at present
it is overgrown with tree lucerne, periwinkle, saltbush
and vines. A new joint venture between members of the
Croquet Club and All Saints Church will work to
gradually return the land to native bush. The project
was the idea of Richard Kimberley of the Sumner Croquet
Club. Work has already commenced and will continue
over the next couple of years as labour and availability
of plants allow. Interested people from the local
community are invited to join in—contact the church
office. Contributions towards buying plants are
also very welcome.
