Sumner Redcliffs Anglican Church

Gaza Conflict: Update

With an estimated 55,000+ causalities in Gaza, 1,195 in Israel in the wake of the 7 October attack in 2023, and 251 hostages taken by Hamas, the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate with dire implications for civilians caught in the crossfire.

Over this past month we have hosted two prayer vigils in Sumner during which we prayed for peace for the region. As a part of our commitment to supporting those suffering the brunt of the conflict, our Vestry (board) has agreed to donate $10,000NZD towards supporting the Al Ahli Anglican Hospital in Gaza.

Despite being damaged during the fighting Al Ahli Anglican Hospital continues to operate. Run by the Anglican Diocese of Jerusalem, the hospital cares for civilians wounded, sick, or injured. They also provide counselling services to children and young people. They also offer prayer and Bibles to those who would like one and continue to serve all those in need regardless of their faith, creed, or ethnicity.

We have sent this donation via the Diocese of Jerusalem and in doing so have been able to ensure the money gets to those on the ground in the most need. As you may know, it is difficult to send money to support people on the ground in the region due to international monetary restrictions. Because we belong to the world wide Anglican Communion we've been able to send money directly to those in need in a manner that is both trustworthy and legal.

If you would like to know more, please contact the parish office. If you would like to contribute towards this, please contact Rev Harry.

In the meantime, we continue to pray for peace in the region. Heathcote Anglican Church will be hosting prayer vigils over the month of September; details to follow.
